Da die einzelnen Aufgabenbereiche Sozialindikatorenforschung, Sozialberichterstattung und Sozialstatistik in engem Zusammenhang stehen, lassen sie sich nicht deutlich voneinander abgrenzen und besitzen zum Teil ähnliche Funktionen und Ziele.
Wichtigster Anwendungsbereich der Sozialindikatorenforschung ist die Sozialberichterstattung, die einen spezifischen Teilbereich der Sozialstatistik darstellt.
Im Folgenden werde ich mich jedoch auf das Thema „Sozialindikatorenforschung“ beschränken.
Sozialindikatoren spielen in der heutigen Gesellschaft eine bedeutende Rolle, da mit ihrer Hilfe das Informationsbedürfnis der Gesellschaft weitgehend befriedigt werden kann und Veränderungen schnell erkannt werden können.
