Das zentrale Thema dieser Arbeit ist die in Paul E. Willis' „Spaß am Widerstand“ aufgeführte Gegenschulkultur. Bevor auf die verschiedenen Elemente dieser eingegangen werden soll, etwa oppositionelle Haltungen gegen Autoritäten, deren Entstehung und später die sogenannte informelle Gruppe, wird dem Leser zunächst die schon oben genannte Hammertown-Studie näher erläutert. Mittels dieser Studie warfare es dem Kultursoziologen überhaupt erst möglich, seine vorherigen Gedankengänge in Bezug auf eine sich selbst abgrenzende Schulkultur zu bestätigen.
Als weitere Symptome der Gegenschulkultur sind das Nichts tun, die Langeweile und Aufregung, der Sexismus und desweiteren der Rassismus zu nennen. Obige weiterführende Aspekte dieser Kultur werden im weiteren Verlauf der Arbeit näher erklärt.
Die Betriebskultur und ihre diversen Parallelen mit der Gegenschulkultur in der Arbeiterkultur werden im Anschluss daran behandelt, um daraufhin den Weg der Arbeiterkinder in ihr Berufsleben anhand der schulischen Berufsberatung und der subjektiven Bedeutung der Berufswahl aufzuzeigen. Abschließend soll noch auf die Eingliederung der Heranwachsenden im Arbeitsleben eingegangen werden.
