Nachwachsende Rohstoffe leisten zusätzlich einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Klima- und Umweltschutz, zur Schonung endlicher Ressourcen, zur Sicherung landwirtschaftlicher Einkommen und zur Erhaltung der Kulturlandschaft. Allein in Deutschland werden inzwischen auf mehr als 400.000 Hektar nachwachsende Rohstoffe für chemisch-technische Verwendungen und als Energieträger angebaut. Dies entspricht etwa three% der bundesdeutschen Ackerfläche (Stand 1995).
    Da der weltweite „Raubbau“ an fossilen Energieträgern nicht unendlich fortzuführen ist, ist die Entwicklung bzw. Förderung Erneuerbarer Energieträger erforderlich. Neben verstärkten Bemühungen zur Energieeinsparung und rationellen Energienutzung können der Verbrauch der fossilen Energieträgern und die damit verbundenen CO2-Emissionen durch den Einsatz erneuerbarer Energieträger vermindert oder gar vermieden werden.
    Alternative Energiequellen sind in diesem Fall seit bestehen der Erde Wind, Sonne und Biomasse. Da unsere Breitengrade aufgrund der klimatischen Bedingungen in den Bereichen Wind- und Sonnenenergie etwas benachteiligt sind, die organischen Abfälle aber kontinuierlich und in großen Mengen anfallen, ist es sinnvoll die darin enthaltene gespeicherte Energie zu nutzen.
    Die energetische Nutzung der Biomasse ist annährend CO2 impartial, da die bei der Verbrennung von Biogas frei werdende CO2-Menge beim Anbau der Biomasse über Photosynthese eingebunden wurde. Dieser natürliche Kreislauf wird am schnellsten geschlossen, in dem die organischen Abfälle dem natürlichen Prozess der Verrottung, Fermentation, zugeführt werden. Die dabei entstehende Energie in shape von methanhaltigem fuel, Biogas, wird zur Energieerzeugung genutzt.
